3D Acceleration

Most people don’t know that they need 3D acceleration to play games properly. This acceleration is provided by a special card that plugs into a AGP or PCI-E slot and performs the extremely complex calculations needed to render the gorgeous graphics and effects you see in the game.

Some cards are so complex that they do pixel shading and other calculations that are simply beyond the scope of the processor. The card clears up the load on the processor which can then do basic tasks better and make the game run properly.

In Business

Article Web is now considered out of Beta. I would like readers to post suggestions and tell us what kind of articles they would want to read about. This feedback will help us come up with more information and interesting posts.

I don’t have the contact form up yet so please leave comments in this post.

Dump IE, Get Firefox or Opera

By now you must all know that Internet Explorer is a poor choice when you have great software like Firefox and Opera in the market. With bugs and vulnerabilities, it is the worst choice you can make. IE7 addressed many problems and is slightly better but creating a web page for IE is still a nightmare.

IE does not follow any standards and makes life difficult for both users and web developers. Firefox and Opera strive to follow web standards so you’d be much better off using them.

Spice Up Your Desktop With WindowBlinds

The last post about reverting to the Windows Classic theme to save memory got me thinking. What other alternatives are there?

If you have enough memory, you can try WindowBlinds which replaces the default XP skinning engine and does a better job of rendering themes. The specially made WindowBlinds theme look great and work well. In fact, I have been using WindowBlinds for months now and I have had no problems with it.

Windows Classic Theme - Better Performance

In the last post I suggested turning off desktop wallpaper to boost performance. If you have a crappy computer then you should really use the Windows Classic theme instead of the colourful Windows XP default theme. It looks ugly, yes, but your operating system will feel more responsive. Worth the trade-off? You decide.

Remove Desktop Wallpaper To Save Memory

If you have a really old computer then you can save a lot of processing power and memory by turning off the desktop wallpaper. Back when I had my Pentium 233 MHz processor refreshing the desktop was quite a task and a wallpaper really did not help. Turning it off, I saw a slight performance increase. When you have 64 MB of SDRAM you should take whatever increase you get and be happy with it.

Customize SendTo Menu

When you right click a file you get a Send To option (Windows XP) in the context menu that lists some locations such as the floppy drive and any other removable drives. The interesting thing about this menu is that it can be customized easily.

Go to Run and type ’sendto’. A folder will open with all the options. You can add programs like Notepad so that you can open text files that are not associated with the program easily or you could add folders for quickly moving the data. Delete the options you don’t need. Try it out!

It’s A Text Editor

Some people have used Windows so much that they ask you to use Notepad when you want to edit some text content, even when you are on Linux.

They fail to understand that Notepad is a text editor and when they say that the file must be edited in Notepad they are showing their ignorance. Using the term ‘text editor’ will take you a long way with the tech crowd and you would be considered less pathetic.

Play NES Games

Nintendo Entertainment System (NES) was one of the first consoles we remember playing on and the games were great fun. Now we can play those games on our computers using an emulator and the ROM.

The ROM is a memory dump of a video game cartridge to a computer file and the emulator is the program that processes this file and displays the game. Get the emulator and the ROM and you are good to go.

Emulator: Nestopia
ROM: Google search for it.

Open the ROM with the emulator, play around with the options or use the default settings and you can start playing the game.

Now you can technically run a server and connect two Nestopia clients together but this isn’t a simple processes for beginners and I shall cover it in another post.
